Fire, smoke, and surprise—experience the drama of Raku
Join us at Jane’s for an unforgettable First Saturday Raku experience with guest potter Jon Salazar. This high-energy workshop introduces participants to the excitement and immediacy of Raku firing, a low-temperature ceramic process inspired by traditional Japanese techniques. Pots are rapidly fired, removed from the kiln while glowing red hot, and placed into combustible materials such as newspaper or sawdust, creating striking surface effects and beautifully unpredictable results.
Students will receive a brief overview of Raku’s history, learn how to apply in-house Raku glazes, and take an active role in the firing and reduction process. This is a hands-on, sensory-rich experience that emphasizes experimentation, chance, and the dramatic transformation of clay through fire. Finished pieces will be ready to take home at the end of the workshop.
Registration requires students to bring up to five bisque-fired pieces (B-mix with grog or Raku clay recommended). Ideal pot size is under 6 inches. Please contact Jon at clay_boss@hotmail.com with questions or to discuss larger or unusual forms. Due to the nature of Raku firing, participants should expect high heat, open flames, and smoke. Long pants, cotton clothing, and closed-toe shoes are required. Smaller pieces are strongly recommended due to kiln size and time limitations.
